Ghanaians Against Child Abuse (GACA) began in November 2017 as a UNICEF-supported initiative championed by Ghana’s Second Lady, Mrs. Samira Bawumia, to mobilize citizens against all forms of violence, neglect and exploitation of children. What started as a one-day launch aligned with the World Day for the Prevention of Child Abuse quickly evolved into an ongoing “Child Protection Social Drive,” leveraging social media campaigns, mobile theatre performances and educational comic books to reshape public attitudes and behaviors.
By its first anniversary in November 2018, GACA had inspired thousands of Ghanaians to pledge their personal commitment against child abuse, marking a significant cultural shift in how communities view and respond to threats against children. Over the years, the campaign has expanded its reach to all 16 regions and 160 districts of Ghana, securing more than 10,900 pledges and engaging an estimated 1.45 million people in advocacy and awareness-raising activities.
Independent evaluations have highlighted GACA’s impact in strengthening district-level social-welfare workforces and improving case-management systems for at-risk children. From its humble beginnings to its current nationwide presence, GACA stands as a testament to the power of collective action in safeguarding the rights and well-being of Ghana’s children.
